Blackwork Cuff in Progress by groundlingchild Blackwork Cuff in Progress by groundlingchild
This is my first attempt at blackwork embroidery. I'm freehanding this design based loosely on an embroidered coif I found on The Internet.

The cuff will eventually be attached to an Elizabethan box-pleat gentleman's shirt, whose cuffs and collar will bear this pattern.

I'm 2/3 done with the first cuff, and thought it would be nice to document the progress as I go.

I expect to be done with this cuff in the next 2-3 days. Each square inch of embroidery takes about an hour, and there was a section of about an inch square that had to be taken out and redone because it looked really awful. I estimate that about ten hours have gone into this project so far, and that the total time for just the embroidery should be around 100 hours based on the size of the remaining cuff and collar.

I was originally basing it stitch for stitch on the original but it just looked... awkward. So I ditched the source and started winging it, and it has better flow.
